Swimming is permitted in various gorges and waterholes in the West MacDonnell Ranges, such as Ormiston Gorge and Ellery Creek Big Hole. The water temperature can be cold, especially outside of summer, so it’s advisable to be prepared for a cool swim. Visitors should always follow local guidance and signs regarding swimming conditions, as they may be affected by inclement weather and seasonal changes.
West MacDonnell National Park offers designated camping areas with basic facilities, with campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis and fees applying at some sites. For a longer Outback adventure, two-, three- and four-day tours depart from Alice Springs and include overnight stays at exclusive campsites, where you can sleep in a safari tent or a traditional bush swag.
