What to Expect
Phnom Kulen, is a mountain range in Cambodia, and is located northeast of Siem Reap. Spend the day exploring this beautiful area and enjoy a delicious picnic too! Not many travelers passing through Siem Reap have the opportunity to visit Phnom Kulen, primarily due to the cost of getting there and getting back. Your host, Soy Kosal, has been working in hotel hospitality for nearly 7 years. Kosal loves showing tourists around his native land and he is happy to organize custom outings depending on the length of your stay.
Kulen is considered by Khmers to be the most sacred mountain in all of Cambodia and it is a popular place for domestic visitors during weekends and festivals. The hill was used as the ancient capital city in AD 802 by the King, Jayavarman II, who declared himself as God King and announced independence from Java. On the hilltop there are 56 Angkorian temples made up of bricks and volcanic stones, but most of them are in poor condition today.
Soy Kosal will also bring you to the famous waterfall which splits in two spots. The water is considered holy and Khmers like to bottle it to take home with them. The source of water eventually flows into Tonle Sap Lake and is thought to bless the waterways of Cambodia.
Itinerary
You’ll leave from your hotel by 8:00AM before reaching the mountain. You will also travel along the valley called the "Mountain of Lychees.” Once you reach the peak, you will see two waterfalls. You’ll also see a large statue of the sleeping Buddha on this tour. A moderate amount of walking is involved on this tour, so be prepared for that. Due to uneven surfaces which you’re sure to encounter, this tour is not recommended for those with walking disabilities or using a wheelchair. This tour will happen rain or shine, so come prepared for whatever the weather forecast may be! Participants will also have the opportunity to swim during this journey, so please bring swimwear if desired. Both male and female visitors are also advised to cover up to their elbows and knees or risk refusal of entry, due to the complex being a highly religious site. There’s a lot to be seen on this tour, and Soy Kosal will serve as your point person of knowledge along the way.
