Road to Hana Adventure Tour: Departing Maui or OahuGet ready to experience the longest scenic route in the world on the ultimate 1 Day adventure with departures from Maui or Oahu
What to Expect
Take part in the ultimate day tour as you traverse longest scenic route in the world!
Kick off your day with a complimentary breakfast at the local Haiku Market.
You'll then head to the Ulupalakua Ranch, where you'll pass through the small town of Keokea and an array of beautiful countryside farms and ranches.
Known as one of Maui’s oldest and largest ranches with beautiful rolling pastures and green forest, Ulupalakua Ranch is a must see!
Leaving the ranch the tour will enter what locals call the Backside of Maui - as it is the most isolated part of the island. Be prepared for unbelievable picture stops at the Manawainui overlook, Kaupo Ranch, St. Joseph’s Church (built in 1865) and enjoy passing small towns such as Kanaio, Kahikinui, Kaupo, (including a stop at the Kaupo Store).
Following on, you'll enter the Kipahulu district and the edge of the rainforest - a place that American aviator Charles Linberg loved so much that he requested to be buried here after he died, with Palapalahoomau Church the site of his grave.
Moving on from the morbidly beautiful, you'll head to the Wailua Waterfalls. During this part of your adventure, you'll start passing fresh tropical fruit stands, the first waterfalls and more beautiful tropical coastal views.
New Wailua is the largest waterfall visible from the highway and is a spectacular site to see - so be sure to have your camera ready to capture the moment! There are also Hawaiian craft/jewelry stands and such for the next several miles - so spending money is a must.
All this wandering calls for lunch. Enjoy a stop at Koki Beach in Hana. Koki and Homoa beaches are by far two of the most beautiful beaches in the USA – and voted so by Travel Magazine more than once. Discover a place where breathtaking white sand beaches, turquoise coloured water and the rainforest all come together right down to the shoreline. It truly is a special place to enjoy your lunch on the beach, on a picnic table or on the picturesque lawn area.
With your stomachs full, head on to Hana - known as the gem of Hawaii for nowhere else is the Hawaiian culture more embraced. Immerse yourself in a laid back lifestyle with a profound sense of spirituality all around. The tour will also make a brief stop to check out the town and use the restrooms before moving on to Wainapanapa State Park and Black Sand Beach.
At this memorable stop, discover a place where the cobalt blue ocean finds itself surrounded by black sand and lava rocks. Go for a walk along the edge of the bay, check out the water or just sit under a nice shade tree - however you choose to spend your time here, it's a great place to spend a few minutes taking in one of the islands most beautiful places.
The historical volcanic caves at Wainapanapa State Park are also worth exploring - and if you're lucky, you could witness the legend of the caves come alive! At certain times of the year, red shrimps appear, turning the water...red, in a strange, natural phenomenon.
At Pua’a Ka’a state park, you'll discover two safe and easy to access waterfalls and freshwater pools which make for a great place to stop and take a swim!
Onwards to Wailua and Keanae, you'll discover two small Hawaiian villages doing their best to live like the Hawaiians of old. From hunting pigs and growing taro, to grazing on bread fruit and bananas - these are all big parts of everyday life in this small community. It’s also the site of the famous 'Halfway to Hana' snack stand, where you can sample shaved ice, fresh coconut, cold drinks and of course, the original fresh-baked banana bread.
While here, take a moment to stop at The Keanae overlook and peninsula, which offer views of one of the largest taro farms in Hawaii!
The journey continues to Waikamoi Stream and the Hamakua Ditch - a man-made aqueduct created in the late 1800’s to move water into the central valley, before moving on to Hookipa Beach.
Considered the windsurf capital of the world, enjoy a few minutes watching windsurfers, kiteboarders and surfer challenge the oceans waves and shoreline winds before your big day out wraps up!
