Frequently Asked Questions about Lady Musgrave Island Day Tour

Where is Lady Musgrave Island?

Lady Musgrave Island is the second southernmost island in the Great Barrier Reef with only Lady Elliot Island more southern.

The trip to Lady Musgrave Island is approximately 2 hours 15 from the time the tour departs Bundaberg and reaches the island.

Certainly not! The reef is a large, diverse ecosystem covering hundreds of thousands of square kilometres. Every part of the reef will be different to another, however, you certainly will not miss anything by deciding to come to the southern great barrier reef rather than Cairns.

Towel, sunscreen, swimmers, hat, camera, footwear for island walks, jumper/sweater, cash/eftpos for drinks or souvenirs at the bar.

Yes, there are freshwater showers with the chill taken off onboard the vessel, which you can use to rinse yourself after water activities.

Please bring a bottle of water that can be refilled throughout the day from our chilled and triple-filtered water cooler. Cold soft drinks, juices and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase onboard.

Nature has something to share and surprise us with every day of the year. During the winter months, the tour sees the humpback whale migration, while in summer the tour sees mating, nesting and hatching turtles. All activities take place all year round, including snorkelling and diving.  While Great Barrier Reef tours which depart out of Cairns and other destinations along the Great Barrier Reef may have a distinct stinger season, our subtropical climate means the tour is exempt from this and can swim safely all year round.

A towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, thongs or footwear for island walks and a camera to capture your experience. Money to buy drinks, snacks or souvenirs from the kiosk bar. Certification card if you are a certified diver and money to pay for an introductory dive if you want to do your first dive! The tour sells thongs for those who require footwear for island walks.

The tour provides high-quality Mares masks, snorkel and fins. The tour also has optical masks and wetsuits for hire.

On board, there is plenty of high-quality Mares Sharky Jr masks and snorkels suited for children aged 4-7 and junior fins.

Regardless of swimming ability, the tour recommends guests to swim in buddy pairs. However, if you are not a confident swimmer an in-water snorkel guide will be able to assist by providing additional floatation and reassurance in the water. Life vests, pool noodles and wetsuits are available.

To ensure guests experience the most from their trip to Lady Musgrave the day is divided into activities. Grouping will coordinate snorkelling times for guests and designate time to partake in the island activities including the glass bottom boat and guided island tour. However, if guests do not want to participate in the island activities an all-day snorkel option is available.

Guests will enjoy up to 2 hours of snorkelling if choosing to participate in all activities, and if snorkelling all day, up to 4 hours.

No, anyone can snorkel! The entry and exit points to the water are very easy and we make every effort to ensure the safety of all guests. Swim jackets, noodles and in-water assistance from our wonderful, fully qualified and experienced staff is provided. The tour recommends that children be supervised by an adult at all times. Please note that it is Queensland regulations that any medical conditions which may affect your ability to snorkel safely must be disclosed to our staff. By informing us, we will be able to ensure your safety and make sure you have the best experience possible!

This is a UNESCO World Heritage Listed Site and a dedicated Marine Park Green Zone. Under no circumstances must we touch the coral, wildlife or any other naturally occurring part of the Great Barrier Reef. This protects the Great Barrier Reef for the enjoyment of today’s and future generations as well as protecting yourself from potential infection or damage from the coral and wildlife.

The turtles at Lady Musgrave are wild creatures however our experience will do everything to provide guests with the opportunity to see a turtle. The snorkel guides’ in-depth snorkel briefing will highlight the location of a marked turtle cleaning station and the best snorkel path for snorkelers. While ensuring the safety of guests in the water, the in-water snorkel guides and lookout crew will help spot any turtles for snorkelers. The Glass Bottom Boat Driver will also take guests to the turtle cleaning station during the Glass Bottom Boat Tours and during breeding season turtle tracks can be seen on the island. If you are very lucky, during the season (January to March), it may be possible to see baby hatchlings running to the water from their nests. Nature is full of surprises and our crew will do its best to work with nature to bring you the best experience possible.

As travel to Lady Musgrave Island is an open ocean passage, the tour strongly recommends that all passengers take sea-sickness medication as a precaution. Suggestions to help with sea-sickness is to take a sea-sickness tablet the night prior to travel, stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol & take another sea-sickness tablet the morning of your tour date. The tour has sea-sickness tablets for sale on board.

No, as the tour operates in a Marine Park, the area is protected and it is a requirement by law that all guests stay with the guide on the island. The island tour is a fully guided tour for the safety and enjoyment of our guests, and we ensure you’ll have the chance to enjoy and learn something new as our guides bring the island to life with their narration.

If you're unable to walk for the 45 minute guided island tour, there are some lovely benches and trees to rest under until the tour group returns.

A guest may choose to stay on board the main vessel to snorkel all day instead of participating in the island activities that include the guided island walk and glass-bottom boat tour.

No, all snorkelling activities take place from the boat. As the tour operates in a marine park, their permit allows guests to snorkel within a designated area. This ensures the integrity of the marine park and wildlife is maintained, and of course, helps to ensure guest safety.

All children must be accompanied by an adult at all times whilst onboard. This day tour does not offer any babysitting services, however, the day can be organised and adapted to suit families with children, ensuring everyone gets the most out of their day! Chat to the crew about your options and the tour will do everything we can to accommodate your needs.

Yes, free parking is available in the tour's designated car-park.
